We’ve all made mistakes, had failures and had some just plain bad luck. But with these experiences come wisdom, humility and new pathways of thinking about old issues. The trick is to see these experiences as your greatest teacher.
Voila! There’s a book about that. The Gift of Adversity by Norman E. Rosenthal (subtitle: The Unexpected Benefits of Life’s Difficulties, Setbacks, and Imperfections).
The new mantra in startup business lexicon is fail fast, fail often. I argue that so-called failures are only stepping stones to success as long as we learn lessons and never give up. So it’s true that without adversity, success will never show up. It’s that simple.
Rosenthal shows that dealing with defeats is one of the only ways we are able to grow as humans and ultimately live meaningful lives. Couldn’t agree more. I believe we are born with lessons to learn. Learn them or perish! This book is a great motivator to do just that.
